Heritage Project Essay
To me heritage is something that should be of vital of importance, something that has played a part in history and contributed to why I am where I am today. For heritage to be important to me, it must have had an impact on the lives of my ancestors and the choices they made as well as the things which they fought to uphold. Heritage defines who we are, with the different types of foods, buildings and ways of life between the different cultures that bring us together. The stories and memories passed on from generation to generation, bringing us together and giving us a sense of direction. It is the foundation that we are built upon and allows us to lay new grounds for the future. Debate around the public representation of Juma Masjid. Juma Masjid represents the Muslim community, being one of the most glamorous and extravagant mosques in the country people tend to take it for granted and not take into account its unique architecture and design. With the Muslim population annually increasing, space is not a problem as Juma Masjid is the most spacious Mosque in the southern hemisphere. It represents the Muslim community as it is greeted with great numbers of Muslims on the days of Eid as well as a number of tourists who make the trip into town to marvel at its beauty. Although Indian and Muslim people always having a strong bond and togetherness, they arenââ¬â¢t allowed into the Masjid. This is for any non- Muslim for that matter. In Islam, which has strict rules that one has to abide by and comply too. When you are a Muslim, you believe in the One and Only Allah, all other heritage and cultures are of no effect and are said to be false. There is no place for other religions in Islam, a Muslim should not become derailed from Islam and weaken his faith by giving into the western temptations and ways of life. Juma Masjid has never caused uproar or been part of anything controversial regarding its structure. Muslim people should be grateful as South African is a very understanding and accommodating place, with the government allowing Minarets to be built on Mosques. Muslims in Switzerland arenââ¬â¢t so lucky however, as existing Minarets stand and new ones cannot be built, the Muslim people came out saying that instead of trying to make life hard for them and drive them out of the country the Swiss government should rather ââ¬Ëintegrate rather than excludeâ⬠. Throughout history people have been oppressed upon, some more than others of course. Because of this people would always remember the past and the way that they were treated and try to turn the oppression around. Our divided past still has an impact on the lives we live today, with sport for instance. White people are highly regarded as cricket and rugby players while Black African people are associated with Soccer and form most part of the support system in the sport locally. We should ask ourselves, how do we sort this out? One should remember that common interests bring people together, so instead of carrying on with the old bring in the new and expose people to different environments, taking them out their comfort zones and creating a better future for our country moving forward. As much as we can say that apartheid is over, there is still the lingering after effects of stereotypes and racism in different aspects of life. Therefore, we cannot just forget about it and move on, we should learn from it and educate about it, so it does not deter this country again. The Juma Masjid. The first bit of history surrounding Juma Masjid may be only from the early 1880ââ¬â¢s but for Islam, it was introduced a lot earlier in South Africa, most people believe it to be brought into the country in around 1667 by the Cape Malays. It wasnââ¬â¢t until 1863 though when Aboobaker Amod Jhaveri and Hajee Mahomed Hajee Dada arrived in Durban did Islam really take off and open up to them; the people at the time. It is accepted that they were aboard the SS Truro, one of the passenger liners that brought down labourers from India and other areas. Aboobaker Amod Jhaveri together with Hajee Mahomed Hajee Dada then purchased a plot of land in 1881 from K. Moonsamy for a sum of ? 115 with the intention of building a Masjid for the Muslim people of the Durban area. There was not much of a structure on the site, but none the less they turned this small piece into what would become the largest and most visited Masjid in the southern hemisphere in the century to come. This however still wasnââ¬â¢t the Masjid to be; rather it was a Jamaat Khana. A Jamaat Khana is simple structure in which people could go into and perform their daily prayers. A Jamaat Khana is not even nearly big enough to accommodate the number of Musallees that a Masjid can. A Masjid is much more elaborate in terms of the architecture and minarets, domes and craftsmanshipââ¬â¢s. It wasnââ¬â¢t until 1884 when the two founders had the structure rebuilt to make room for the ever growing numbers of Muslim people in the area. This was now the first Masjid ever to be built in the Natal region. This Masjid could now capacitate up to 200 Muslims. Aboobaker being a businessman and knowing the trade, went ahead and purchased land surrounding the Mosque. This proved a smart and important buy as in the following years he would pass away in India from cholera while on a business. This land that had been bought paid dividend as it was used to expand the Masjid even more. As the last surviving trustee and care taker of the Masjid, Hajee Mahomed had to take action as again space for worshippers was becoming an issue because of the influence of Aboobakerââ¬â¢s business transactions and dealings. It is said that he was an honest and fair man, who attracted many non-Muslims to the path of Islam by the way he went about with his dealings and mannerisms. Hajee Mahomed then acquired more land from John Stanger for a sum of ? 300 in 1889 for the Masjid to expand a little more and comfort the Muslims from. Then in 1893 the British Empire abolished slavery and the Indian population wasting no time formed the Natal Indian Congress. With the freedom now granted to people, the first minaret was built on the extensions of the Masjid; this caused a chain reaction as in the same year two shops were built alongside the Masjid providing some money for the caretaking and maintenance of the Masjid. Then in 1905 during the time in which the Masjid was in full flow, the second minaret was built together with a number of rooms, it also facilitated visitors and travellers by establishing toilets and showers for the people at the back of the Masjid. A living area was also built for the Muazzin; the Muazzin is someone who gives the call to prayer for Muslims all around, the call for prayer is called the Azaan. With the Muazzin now in place, it was about time a group of trustees took control of the Masjid and in 1916; which proved a rather important and significant time in this Masjids history. A board of trustees were elected; they included. Hajee Mahomed Dada, Moosa Hajee Cassim, Abdoola Hajee Cassim, Omar Amod, Joosab Jan Mahomed Tayob Hajee Khan Mahomed. These Muslim men made up the first batch that took the realms and pressure off Hajee Mahomed as they worked with him on continuously allowing this Masjid to flourish. These two minarets were the tallest structures in the area of Durban at the time. In 1927 it was decided that it was time to expand and rebuild Juma Masjid, this contract was given to Payne and Payne architectures. A great part of the Masjid was demolished as the second minaret was brought down as construction was completed in 1928; it was also planned that the minaret would be rebuilt. Many parts and mediums of the Masjid changed then after but the greatest and most significant took place 15 years later when the Masjid went under construction again. This time in 1943, the entire building rather than just part of it that was demolished; everything was brought to the ground except the first minaret. Everything else was rebuilt with the exception of the first minaret as the rest of the Masjid was built and fitted into the Masjid. Juma Masjid is not only a place of worship but also a place of education and learning for people. A school for young Muslim girls was also established in 1957, this school has a roll of approximately 400 learners and 300 Madressah students. A Madressah is an institute put in place for children to learn about their religion of Islam and become law abiding citizens, teaching their students morals, values and etiquette. Being in the heart of the bustling Durban central it is convenient for people working in the area. Established as a girlââ¬â¢s school it is now a co-ed school. The Masjid itself is very beautiful Juma Masjid is of major importance in the Muslim community of Durban, as it is occupied daily by hundreds of Muslim men who attend prayers daily. On Fridays in particular, Grey Street will always be busier than usual as all roads lead to Juma Masjid. Friday is the day of most important after Eid prayers in a Muslims life. Thousands of Muslim men close their shops, leave work early and make their way to Juma Masjid in prayer. Women at home prepare lunch as they get ready for their prayers as well. Two other days are also busier than usual; the days of Eid. As thousands of Muslims take the day off from work as everything apart from religion comes to a stop. Everyone in the household is awake early as they ready themselves for the day that lies ahead. Muslim men all flock to Eid Prayers early in the morning as there are large gatherings all around the city. The day is then spent with family, great functions are held as people come together to celebrate this auspicious day of Eid. Juma Masjid has a distinct Islamic architecture style to, with its golden minaret which glistens in the rays of the sun many people often forget itââ¬â¢s majestic and eye popping beauty. I for one am yet to come across a Masjid that has shops, offices, a school and still a beautifully designed Masjid; all in one structure. When you enter this Masjid you are greeted with an archway, which is just underneath one of the golden minarets. Leaving your shoes outside your feet are met by the soft and warm red cushioning carpet as they sink into the carpeted floor as you enter this century old marvel. Once inside, it is realised Juma Masjid is amazing inside as well, built in a baronial style. Juma Masjid is truly something to be admired. With a Corinthian type walls on each of its high rise levels. Being Muslim I have visited many different Masjids around the country but not once have I ever come across another Masjid that has a pond in its Wudhu area. Wudhu being commonly known as ablution, simply cleansing oneself of impurities and keeping yourself clean and respectable as you prepare to stand before Allah in prayer. With the Wudhu area being a square with ablution stations all around it, all comes together with a pond in the middle and topping it off fish swimming inside is just the wonders of this spiritual sanctuary.

Nationalism Is a Recipie for Peace and International Order, Discuss.
ââ¬Å"Nationalism is a recipe for peace and international orderâ⬠. Discuss. Nationalism is primarily the belief in bringing the borders of the state in line with the boundaries of the nation, yet within it exist many strands which disagree as to how this ought to be done. Liberal Nationalism champions the idea that nations are sovereign entities, entitled to liberty, and also possessing rights, most importantly the right of self-determination. Therefore Liberalism does not condone forms of foreign dominion, and hence condemns expansionism through violence, and so may be described as maintaining peace.Furthermore, Liberal Nationalists believe that the ideal world would be constructed of independent, sovereign nation-states. They also believe that these nation-states are equal, like the individuals within them, and that each will be entitled to self-determinism and as all these nation-states are equal and no chauvinism exists, it cannot be stated that Liberal Nationalists would a dvocate expansionism due to a global hierarchy, as Expansionist Nationalism does. Liberal Nationalists believe that the establishment of a world of nation-states with equal self-determination is a means of establishing international peace and order.Past wars were merely a result of the ââ¬Ëold orderââ¬â¢ which was dominated by autocratic and militaristic empires which sought to obtain the dominions of other nations through violence in order for economic reasons or ideological ones. Democratic nation states would respect the national sovereignty of their neighbours and have no incentive to wage war or subjugate others. Liberal Nationalists believe that Nationalism is a force that is capable of promoting both unity within each nation and brotherhood amongst all nations on the basis of mutual respect for national rights and characteristics.Liberal Nationalists would argue that it would be almost impossible to achieve both peace and international order in a world which is not form ulated from nation-states, as these states would not be able to correctly legislate and satisfy the desires of the individuals which compose the nation and so stimulating internal aggravation, which if existent in every non-nation-state would lead to global conflict. However though promoting peace, there seems to be an internal contradiction within Liberal Nationalism.Though it preserves self-government and forbids foreign control, it also creates a world of sovereign nation-states in which each nation has the freedom to pursue its own interests, possibly at the expense of other nations. Though this may be made less of a possibility in recent times, with mechanisms such as democracy and constitutionalism in place, unlike in societies where liberals would state a ââ¬ËSocial contractââ¬â¢ exists which prevent peoples freedom being infringed upon through others exercising their own freedoms, on an international scale this does not exist. This suggests that when sovereign nations o perate within conditions of ââ¬Ëinternational anarchyââ¬â¢, self-restraint alone may not be sufficient to ensure what Kant called ââ¬ËPerpetual peaceââ¬â¢. Liberal Nationalists have two means of ensuring that this perpetual peace exists in the modern world. The first of these is free trade. This serves as a deterrent to war as economic interdependence means that the material costs of international conflict are so great that warfare would prove extremely detrimental to the economic state and social welfare of all those involved.Secondly, the existence and creation of international organisations capable of bringing order to an otherwise lawless international scene would serve to promote and retain peace as international disputes may be settled by these organisations acting as neutral arbiters. This is exemplified by the League of Nations envisaged by Woodrow Wilson or more currently the United Nations. However, the belief that Nationalism may be a force for peace and inter national order is brought into doubt upon examination of the Expansionist Nationalism strand of Nationalism.Whilst Liberal Nationalism focuses on the establishment of a world of nation-states through self-determinism, Expansionist Nationalism focuses on territorial expansion justified through chauvinism and the existence of a racial hierarchy. This commitment to aggression and militarism held by Expansionist Nationalists may be described as the opposite of a principled belief in national self-determinism held by Liberal Nationalists. One justification for expansionism was its importance to society. Most prominent during the colonial era, war was advocated as a means of achieving national prestige. This imperialism resulted in jingoism in the successful country and was seen as promoting the image of that particular nation and so war was not so much portrayed as a negative if the conquerors emerged victorious. However, another justification would be that it is almost a moral obligation for those more advanced in the racial hierarchy to conquer the lands and civilise those who reside within them who are further down the hierarchy.Through this expansionism those exercising it would be making the world a better and essentially more peaceful place, as if this was exercised to the extreme of world domination the whole world would then conform to the views and beliefs on this original one nation and so also establishing world order. Yet the existence of chauvinism as a force within ideology does nothing to promote peace directly, as chauvinism is primarily an exaggerated, bellicose patriotism and a belligerent belief in national superiority and glory which would not fail to create conflict between nations as each struggle to survive or conquer. In conclusion, though the strands vary widely on their beliefs I believe that Nationalism is a recipe for international order and peace. This is due to the fact that though Expansionist Nationalism exists, it was mainly prominent in the Colonial Era and to be exercised in the current political climate would incur serious repercussions from international organisations such as the United Nations and so it is clear that Liberal Nationalism is the more widely followed strand. It is merely the chauvinism involved in Expansionist Nationalism which would serve to break down international order and peace as a pose to building it.

What is your experience with writing, both in English and in your first language - Essay Example The amount of time spent formulating an effective message is much less compared to that spent used to write using the less used language. It happens that the main mode of communication and the internationally accepted language is English. Therefore, the education system has made it mandatory and more used language than the first languages. Further, it creates a common platform for the diverse people with diverse dialect and languages in total. With that, there is a laxity in the perfecting the first language and making it useful for official communication. English h has got studied and can be taught in a systematic manner unlike first languages in the world over. It is hard for me to use the use English than I do with the first language. With English, it is easier to articulate issues clearly, the time taken to formulate the sensible information is much less, and the language is less complex generally. Therefore makes English dominate over my first language because of the mastery of both languages compared is different. In conclusion, the ability to use language to communicate effectively in writing is determined by the knowledge of the language and the practice in using

The Film GasLand - Movie Review Example This thesis intends to focus on the perspective presented through the film, ââ¬Å"GasLandâ⬠and makes an attempt to build a different bent of mind and school of thought regarding the prevailing system of hydraulic fracturing and the aversive effects it brings on the ecology, environment, and society in the United States. GASLAND AND PERSPECTIVE Fox draws out effectively, the adverse effects that the natural gas drilling boom has brought into the environment, ecology, and lives of the people associated with the event since a decade. The chained effects of the hydraulic fracturing into the environment have been clearly stated, where the preys to the over and exhaustive engineering methodology have been exquisitely pointed out. The film definitely changed the perspective towards the prevailing hydraulic fracturing system in the United States, wherein according to Robert Kohler of Variety, the film depicted and brought changes in the perceptions regarding dangers pertaining to the event of natural gas drilling, very much similar to what the film ââ¬Å"Silent Springâ⬠did to DDT. Bio-centric and eco-centric ethics should influence the environment going forward and establish the interaction with it accordingly. The film at times depicted too much of inclination towards the communities affected by the natural oil and gas drilling. The fact that the boom in the industry has actually brought the adverse ecological and environmental adversities has been neglected at some point of time within the documentary.

Why did Britain want a trading post on Singapore Research Paper
Why did Britain want a trading post on Singapore - Research Paper Example The Sultan of Singapore, Abdul Rahman, was under relatively tight Dutch control and as such, could not allow for the British to set up any trading post in Singapore. However Raffles formulated a plan through which the Sultanââ¬â¢s elder brother would be able to take up the sultanate. Sultan Abdul Rahmanââ¬â¢s elder brother Tengku Hussein Shah was supposed to be the rightful ruler due to his having been the eldest son (Rahim, 2010). Sir Raffles drew up papers that effectively recognized Hussein Shah as being the lawful sultan of not only Johor, but also Singapore. After recognizing Hussein Shah as sultan, Sir Stamford Raffles signed a treaty in February 1819 with Hussein Shah and Temenggong Abdul Rahman, the treaty declared the approval the establishment of a British East India Company trading post in Singapore (Rahim, 2010). The treaty also specified that Sultan Hussein Shah and the Temenggong would in turn receive an annual income from the British. In the establishment of this trading post, it can be noted that Sir Raffles undertook a number of drastic measures in what can be construed to be an indicator of the importance that Britain attributed to the establishment of this trading post (Yew, 2013). This paper will seek to establish why Sir Stamford Raffles and Britain wanted a trading post in Singapore. The geographical location of Singapore is believed to have been one of the key reasons as to why the British essentially chose it as the location where they would set up a new port in the region. The Straits of Melaka had become an important trade route for British traders who would use it when travelling to China during the 19th century. The strait had proven to be a relatively great source of income for these British traders as a result of its facilitation of the lucrative opium-tea and silk trade with China (Yew, 2013). When using the route, British traders would travel from Europe, around the African continent to SEA,

Rhetorical analysis of first writing since Essay
Rhetorical analysis of first writing since - Essay Example Such is an acknowledgement of how people should consider the problems in all other nations instead of America alone. Hence, her response is towards the terrorist attacks, which occurred in September 11, 2011. The poem by Hammad is beautiful and it provides a clear illustration of the feelings and belief she has towards terrorism. The message calls for unification of the entire world irrespective of the cultural background and taking each society as important as the other for the purpose of fighting terrorism and addressing common social issues in different nations. Analyzing the poem through Aristotleââ¬â¢s rhetorical appeals, pathos, ethos and logos, it is clear that Hammad had the ability of creating an appeal to the audience through the pathos. As such, the poem is directed to different cultural backgrounds (American Booksellers Association 18). The entire audience is affected by the theme of the poem since one gets a picture of the September 11, 2011 events ââ¬Å"â⬠¦. Sky where once was stealâ⬠¦.â⬠. Hence, the audience makes a connection of the state of the nation and the environment before the attacks and after the attacks. She ensures that the audience has the ability of developing mental images of the people inside the towers before the attacks and after the attacks. Further, she uses Logos and Ethos in an effective manner. ââ¬Å"My hand went to my headâ⬠¦dead Iraqi Children, the dead in Nicaragua and Rwandaâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ . This is a vivid illustration that Hammad comprehends the current issue, which is facing the American people. However, she needs people to minimize their focus towards the issue and pay attention to the social problems, which are occurring in the other countries. This is also illustrated by ââ¬Å"One more person ask me if I know the hijackersâ⬠¦.â⬠(Hammad 1). Her point in this case is that she is fixed in a situation because of her ethnic background, which would indicate that she is

Biology ( includes abstract, intro, results, dissections ) - Lab Report Example It was found from the comparison that the on average the northern population of Crotalus atrox has much greater heterozygosity than the southern population. Thus it can be considered that the northern population has more genetic variation than the southern population. Various reasons can be accounted for this genetic variation such as mutation in migration because of changed habitat, inbreeding within the southern population, as well as the genetic mechanisms such as genetic drift and gene flow bringing in forces like founder effect and population bottleneck. Therefore it can be concluded that the highway construction has impacted the genetic variations of the populations of Crotalus atrox. Crotalus atrox is an eminent species in semiarid communities, deserts of North America and reside in various regions. Although this specific rattlesnakeââ¬â¢s species are not regarded as endangered, however, investigating this species will aid in the development of better protection and conservation practices (Brennan, 2008). The heterozygosity of Crotalus atrox, the Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnakeââ¬â¢s two populations has been explored in order to ascertain if any change has occurred within the microsatellite diversity amongst the chosen two populations of Crotalus atrox. Investigation of microsatellite diversity leads to better comprehension of genetic fitness and variation within the species. It also provides an opportunity to penetrate on ways of conservation to prevent endangerment caused by the human made (anthropogenic) barriers, which are introduced into the natural habitats. There have been various studies done to explore the influence of anthropogenic barriers on the lives of various organisms. Landscape genetics reveals the way landscape features may impact the population structure by associating genetic discontinuities with environmental or landscape features. Hinduism Paper Essay Example for Free
Hinduism Paper Essay Hinduism is a unique religion. Except for Hinduism, the worldââ¬â¢s most popular religions share the quality of having a single founder. Christianity is based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, Islam on those of Mohammed, Judaism on those of Abraham, and Buddhism on those of Gautam Buddha. According to Adherents.com (2007), Hinduism is the fifth-ranked most popular organized religion in the world; however, unlike the top four religions, Hinduism lacks a unifying belief system. One may wonder how the religion sustains itself when it is so different from the other major religions. All forms of Hinduism are based on four central themes, and the cultural and societal influences of these themes have made Hinduism vital to the region where it originated. According to Das (2009), ââ¬Å"Hinduism is a conglomerate of diverse beliefs and traditionsâ⬠. True Hindus live their lives with devotion to ethics and duties, known as Dharma. Dharma is important because along with Karma (the effects actions have on oneââ¬â¢s life), these two forces influence the soulââ¬â¢s reincarnation, or Samsara. Hindus believe that after many lives of good Karma, the soul reaches the end of the Samsara process, called Moksha. Upon achieving Moksha, the soul gains ââ¬Å"liberation from the limitations of space, time, and matter through realization of the immortal Absoluteâ⬠(Fisher, 2005, p. 75). To ensure this upward movement of the soul, Hindus typically strive to observe tenets of non-violence, celibacy, truth, and cleanliness, among other ethical principles (Das, 2009). Hinduism is practiced largely in the impoverished areas of India. What makes these areas impoverished? According to IndianChild.com, ââ¬Å"The poor spend about 80 percent of their income on food while the rest of the population spends more than 60 percentâ⬠. One way in which the practice of Hinduism benefits people of this area is the belief that cows are sacred. Rather than using the cow for its meat, Hindus benefit more by using the cows for dairy and working the farmlands (Prakasa, 2008). Maintaining a nonviolent lifestyle has also kept warring to a minimum, and as a side effect few cows have perished as a result of war. Sociologists using the social-conflict approach to their studies would find the Hinduism regions a gold mine of information. Most Hindu societies are organized into what is known as a caste system. In a caste system, individuals are born into a certain tier of social privilege and typically remain there throughout their lives. The highest tier, known as Brahmins, was the priestly caste. Brahmins served to bridge the gap between men and gods, acting as temple priests and invoking gods on behalf of others. Besides the two castes just below Brahmins, they were the only ones permitted to study the Vedas, the ancient Hindu holy texts (V, 2008). Kshatriyas are those who make up the second highest caste in the Hindu caste system. This caste is known as the warrior class and the caste of kings. A kingââ¬â¢s social duties included protecting his kingdom and its people, showering the Brahmins with luxurious gifts, and administering justice in a fair manner. Hindu kings were thought to be imbued with the essence of the gods, and as such were never to be despised. Never was a kingââ¬â¢s authority to be questioned unless the king was not fulfilling his responsibilities to the Brahmins. The Vaishyas and the Shudras make up the next two classes. Vaishyas were expected to ââ¬Å"tend cattle, offer sacrifices, study the Vedas, trade, lend money and cultivate the land.â⬠While they were allowed to participate in many religious rituals, they could not marry the women of a higher class. The Shudras relate most equally to the middle class of United States society. As the working caste, their only duties were to serve the higher three classes. They could observe some of the religious rituals, but in most cases were not required to do so. Already not allowed to study the Vedic texts, they were also not allowed to hear the sacred chants or eat food in the company of those from a higher caste. Four castes are typically recognized, but many Hindu cultures observe a fifth, lowest class. The Chandalas were known as the ââ¬Å"impure ones.â⬠Chandalas were not allowed to walk in the same streets as men from higher castes, nor were they even allowed to enter the city during daylight hours. The sight of a Chandala was seen as a bad omen, and even their shadows were considered impure. Forced to live on the outskirts of society, Chandalas typically made their livings as graveyard caretakers, hunters, and professionals adept at cleaning human waste. Being a very different religion from the other major religions, Hinduism has had a unique effect on the regions where it developed. Though one common belief system cannot be found, the tenets on which the religion is based have served to promote a very organized civilization. Whether or not that organization has been more beneficial than what a different organization would have been has been probably been hotly debated, but one undeniable fact remains: if the caste system was not a viable form of social construction, it would not have survived for so long.à Perhaps much of the world can learn about the benefits of religious devotion and ethical lifestyle through study of Hinduism.

Communication and Proffesional Relationships Essay Example for Free
Communication and Proffesional Relationships Essay 1 Information from supporting teaching learning n schools by Louise Burnham To establish respectful, professional relationships with children and young people you should adapt your behaviour and communication accordingly. You should also be able to show that you are approachable and able to work in an environment of mutual support. When working with children or young people, it is important to earn their trust to enable an honest relationship to develop. This can usually be done by ensuring that your behaviour is professional, relationship and fair at all times. Children of all ages, cultures and abilities must feel secure and valued. In order to get these relationships correct from the start you should all discuss rules and how they will be important when working together. Always respect others at the beginning and remember that this is crucial, start by talking about how you are going to work together and what each individual wants out of it. This will enable that you develop a mutually respectful relationship. All of teachers / assistants need to be aware of the kinds of issues which are vital to pupils and always be able to take time in talking these through when necessary. To show children they are part of the school community you should positively communicate and involve pupils. This however is not the same as giving pupils attention when they demand it! HOW TO BEHAVE APPROPRIATELY FOR A CHILD OR YOUNG PERSONââ¬â¢S STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT 1.2 Information from supporting teaching learning in schools by Louise Burnham and internet. Communication with children and young people differs across different age groups and stages of development, which may require varying levels of attention at different times. The younger the child, the more reassurance is required, especially when first starting school. They also may need to have more physical contact as a result. As children become more mature, they may require more help with talking through issues and reflecting their thoughts. For example, in Key stage 1 the manner in which I communicate in is being more adapted, to come down to the childââ¬â¢s level of speaking and repeat what is said for them until it is clearly understood. Where as a child in key stage 3 or 4 the language is used informally and formally depending on their confidence to communicate what they think and as technology as evolved emails and text are used as a form of communication. To have patience, act sensitively and take care with children who haveà communication difficulties, as they will need a lot more time to understand and comprehend what the task in hand is. Also to feel a reassurance that they donââ¬â¢t feel pressurized when speaking. Some children or young people may not have many opportunities to speak or may be anxious or nervous. The level of communication is adapted to the needs of the individual. For example, if they have a speech disorder, such as a stammer, which makes it difficult for them to speak aloud, then extra time should be allowed, for them to collect their thoughts. Also trying not to finish their sentences, or guess what they are trying to say, to give the child independence of their speech, to encourage self-esteem and confidence. HOW TO DEAL WITH DISAGREEMENTS BETWEEN CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE . 1.3 Disagreements between children and their peers will often happen regularly and teachers or assistants will have to deal with these situations. This can happen in the classroom but is usually in the playground or while having lunch. It is very important for pupils to know that you have listened to their view in what has happened. Always make sure you hear from all sides of the story and find out exactly what has happened from the beginning. Then you should decide whether anyone was in the wrong and if apologies are required or any further steps. For example referral to head teacher. Children and young people should also be able to understand how their own feelings may influence their behaviour and this might have to be discussed. For example saying to a childââ¬Ë I understand you are upset today because you could not do baking todayââ¬â¢ will help them link between emotion and behaviour. This will able them to understand how to think about others. An effective way of encouraging children to understand and respect others feelings is discussing this as a whole class or making it an activity such as ââ¬Ëcircle timeââ¬â¢. Circle time is very effective for older children however very young children may not be able to sit for a length of time and be able to wait for their turn before speaking out. Some schools use strategies such as the restorative justice programme. Which is taken from the criminal justice system and have worked well as a method of resolving behaviour issues.

The Post Office
The Post Office The Post Office is a group of three core businesses that form the UKs national postal system. It operates as a public corporation and is owned, but not managed, by the Government. Its businesses are: Royal Mail: the letters business, Post Office Counters Limited, the retail Business and Parcel force, the parcels business. It also runs Subscription Services Limited, which provides a portfolio of services to UK businesses. The group as a whole has recorded a profit for the last 19 years, and is one of the few national Postal administrations to operate without government subsidy. In 1994, following a review set up two years earlier, the Government published a discussion paper that set out proposals for the future of The Post Office. Following a prolonged and intense public debate the Government decided, in 1995, to drop plans for Royal Mail/Parcel force privatisation from its then current legislative programme but in the following year announced it was relaxing some of the financial restraints to allow The Post Office businesses to compete for new business. A brief history of the Post Office The origins of the Post Office can be traced back to 1482 when couriers carrying pacquets (royal messages) were granted the power to requisition horses and guides. By 1660 control of The Post had passed from the monarch to Parliament with the creation of the post of Postmaster General. From the introduction of the uniform penny post in 1840 the Post Office grew and took on new responsibilities until by the 1950s about 1/3 of all civil service staff were employed by the Post Office. In October 1969 the Post Office ceased to be a government department and became a corporation. The responsibility for the day to day management passed from the Postmaster General to the board of the newly constituted corporation, although the new Minister for Posts and Telecommunications still retained control of the Post Offices budget. Further reform followed in 1981 when post and telecommunication were separated and The Post Office Corporation was divided into The Post Office (responsible for postal services and National Giro Bank) and British Telecom (responsible for telephones and telecommunications). Again the argument behind this change was that it would make the Post Office more suited and responsive to the needs of the commercial modern world. The Post Office delivery services survived the mass privatisations of the 1980s. However, British Telecom was privatised in 1984 followed by the National Girobank in 1989. Although, The Royal Mail is the letters division of the Post Office, It is obliged to provide a universal service at a uniform price. This is achieved through cross subsidisation of more costly services by less costly and a monopoly on deliveries of letters costing less than à £1.00. The Royal Mail has a network of approximately 100,000 post boxes and employs approximately 80,000 postmen. Post Office Counters Ltd is a network of approximately 20,000 sub post-offices. They are mostly privately owned and run by agents (sub-postmasters), many are also shops. They sell stamps and provide other services such as pensions, etc. Parcel force is an independent division of the Post Office that operates without a monopoly and in direct competition with a number of private sector companies. Parcel force employs approximately 13, 00 staff, has 165 depots and a fleet of approximately 9000 vehicles. The reason to tell this entire story to explain the changes went through in this organisation by the time requirement. Description of nature of information systems: A Local Area Network (LAN) had been introduced in the Newcastle upon Tyne postal district 18 months earlier and was intended to link together different locations in the Newcastle area and to provide a gateway to other Post Office LANs nationwide. Initially use of this system was restricted to senior (board level) managers but with the impending restructuring and expected privatisation use of the LAN was extended to other levels in the organisation. At the initial time of the interviews there were 37 terminals in the Newcastle area and 6 at remote sites. The Newcastle LAN could also be used to link to another 20 Post Office LANs in different parts of the country. The system integrated elements of personnel, administration, recruitment and data on human resource utilisation with data on costing and the volume of business transactions. What is a network? A network is a generic term for any computer based communications system that links together a number of computers and other devices. A network may be called a LAN (Local Area Network) or a WAN (Wide Area Network). LANs are networks that connect several devices, usually through a single cabling system, within a clearly defined area such as a single building or a group of adjacent buildings. WANs on the other hand are networks used to distribute data around sites that may be scattered across or single country or the entire world. WANs may be composed of interlinked LANs and may use a number of different communications links (e.g. satellite and telephone lines) to join their component parts. Networks may take many forms although, conceptually, they only consist of two parts. Description and analysis of functional use of information systems: The networking software defines the logical structure of the network: it controls and co-ordinates certain activities in a group of otherwise independent processors (network stations). At the heart of each network is the fileserver. The fileserver treats the network stations as if they were storage peripherals (e.g. disk drives) while the network stations treat the fileserver as if it were a hard disk reading from it and writing to it as required. To each machine it appears as though the data had simply come from a disk drive. Communications software and the physical link both the network stations and the fileserver run communications software to send data to each other through the physical link. The physical link, i.e. cabling system, defines the physical structure of the network while the communications software carries the data along the physical link; together these two things act as a medium for the communication between fileserver and network station. However networks can facilitate communication between people as well as machines. Electronic mail, diaries and teleconferencing facilities can be used as a medium for communication, control and co-ordination between people. For example, e-mail allows asynchronous communication between individuals or groups and also enables the efficient distribution of text based memos or messages to a group, or groups, of recipients. Assessment of current use of information systems Security and ease of management: Networks, by their nature, impose restrictions on certain actions by certain users at particular times (e.g. two users cannot write to the same file at the same time). This greatly simplifies file management and can provide several layers of additional security, e.g. passwords and or access only via dedicated terminals. Networking software can also provide alarms and audit trails to assist dealing with security problems if they do occur. Resilience Networks are virtually unaffected by local damage. If a network station breaks down it can be simply removed without any disruption to the other users. If the data has been backed up then no data need have been lost; the user can simply move to another network station. The fileserver on the other hand is the hub of the network; if this ceases to function the whole network stops. However, once again, if all the data has been backed up and good recovery procedures exist networks can even survive a fault at the fileserver. Efficient use of resources: Networks make a more efficient use of resources as they allow the apparently simultaneous use of one application by several users. The most obvious example of this is the shared use of programs such as word processors and spreadsheets. These will only need to be installed once on a file server and can then be used on any number of machines. Networks also allow the cost of expensive but infrequently used items, such as specialist printers or tape drives, can be shared between a large numbers of users. Similarly old, unusual or otherwise obsolescent equipment can also be made use of in this way.
Endosymbiosis Essay -- Biology Biological Papers
Endosymbiosis Endosymbiosis is the theory that eukaryotic cells were formed when a prokaryotic cell ingested some aerobic bacteria. The first step of the evolution of a eukaryotic cell is the infolding of the cellular membrane. This process takes place when the plasma membrane folds inwards and develops an envelope around a smaller prokaryotic cell. Once the smaller cell is engulfed, it becomes dependent upon its host cell. It relies on the host cell for organic molecules and inorganic compounds. However, the host cell also benefits because it has an increased output of ATP for cellular activities and becomes more productive. This ATP comes from the mitochondrion (the aerobe) that is engulfed. All eukaryotic cells contain the mitochondrion that is made through this process. However, only some of the eukaryotic cells (plant cells) form chloroplasts through endosymbiosis after the mitochondrion is formed. Some of the prokaryotic cells ingest cyanobacteria. These bacteria contain photosynthetic pigments that are useful in photosynthesis. The cyanobacteria become dependent upon the host cell and can no longer survive on its own. Over time, it becomes the chloroplast, a main organelle of plant cells. The chloroplast is then able to convert energy from the sun to energy-rich sugar molecules which are then converted to chemical energy in the form of ATP. (1) The evidence for endosymbiosis is most prevalent in the mitochondria and chloroplasts of cells. The ribosomes of mitochondria and chloroplasts resemble that of prokaryotic ribosomes because of their similar size, 70s. Mitochondria, chloroplasts, and prokaryotes all divide by binary fission. The genome of mitochondria and chloroplasts most resemble prokaryot... ...he nucleus as well. In conclusion, the nucleus is an endosymbiont of bacteria and archaea. The host cell most likely did not come from the bacteria. The host cell, chronocyte, was not a prokaryotic cell but one that had a cytoskeleton composed of actin and tubulin and a complex membrane system. The chronocyte contributed to the end product that is the euaryotic cell. Its contributions were the cytoskeleton, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and major intracellular control systems. relationships in pride and prejudice :: essays research papers
Relationship in Pride and Prejudice In the novel Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austen, several, if not all of her characters, can confirm the belief that in order to achieve happiness one must discard their pride and in turn, replace it with self-respect accompanied by some humility. In addition, acceptance and mutual respect must replace oneââ¬â¢s prejudice. The novel reveals four couples that live through social inconviences. The setting, although the novel does take place in many different places, is mainly broadcasted from Longbourn, somewhere in England. It is set around the Bennet family, which consists of seven members. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, and their five daughters which of whom none are yet married. At this period in time, marriage was based a great deal upon money and reputation, not so much love and trust. When a single man entered town, he was called upon only if his financial situation was above normal. Marriage was based around land, family connections, and wealth. In many minor characters of the novel, pride is a common characteristic. Mrs. Bennet, for instance, is extremely proud when it comes to her daughterââ¬â¢s marriages of mercenary benefits. She is so concerned that her neighbors have a high opinion of her that her own vanity will not Proposal Scenes The first proposal scene deals with Mr. Collins's proposal to Elizabeth, this is a very odd occurrence as Mr. Collins is Elizabeth's cousin and he sort of appears from nowhere and expects Elizabeth to marry him. This is what is funny about this proposal because Mr. Collins expects Elizabeth to marry him because he is a clergy man and it would be right and proper for him to marry a lady like miss Bennett. When Mr. Collins, a tall, swarthy young man of twenty-five,arrives, he heaps indiscriminate praise on everything. He compliments Mrs. Bennett on her cooking and speaks highly of everything about the girls. In every way, he appears to be a peculiar figure. Mr. Collins asks Mrs. Bennett "May I hope, madam, for your interest with your fair daughter Elizabeth, when I solicit for the honour of a private audience with her in the course of this morning?"Mrs. Bennett agrees and tries to leave the room taking Kitty with her but Elizabeth stops her and says "Dear madam, do not go. I beg you will not go. Mr. Collins must excuse me.

Wow Black Eye
Ebonie Quick March 6, 2012 MKTG 4103 Case: Black-eyed Marketing 1. The Black Eyed Peas are a band that appeals the global fans base. Their wide variety fan makes them an ideal candidate to serve as a spokesperson for a product. The type of product they endorse would vary, but also be limited. For example their feel good pop music wouldnââ¬â¢t be used to represent a new drug to treat diabetes. On the other hand their music could be used to endorse entertainment, events, advancement in technology, and other social aspect of our society. . The Blacked Eyed Peas have done very well when it comes to socially engaging a consumer and a product. They bring high energy performances to excite people about a certain brand or product. Brands and product that what to appeal to consumers emotions by cause excitement, interest, or curiosity benefit the most from bands like The Blacked Eyed Peas, and other rock bands. Country artists tend to be about to trigger sadness or happy emotions, those ty pes or artists can be used to endorse more sentimental or serious products. . My target for the concert would be teens and young adults that are energized and like to have fun. The concept of the television would be would a rave in which the Blacked Eyed Peas where rocking out behind a graffiti stage. The audience would be full of live and energy, jumping around while singing the lyrics. The purpose of this ad would be to show young adults that you can be sober and still have fun while listen to your favorite band live. 4. A pop band will be coming to rock out with us, as well as shake things up from the normal R&B performances. 5. Brands and product that want to take a serious approach in there advertisement wouldnââ¬â¢t use a band such as the Blacked Eyed peas. Board Game and Total Cycle Time
X-Opoly Inc. X-Opoly, Inc. , was founded by two first-year college students to produce a knockoff real estate board game similar to Monopoly. Initially, the companyââ¬â¢s purpose was to produce a board game based on popular local landmarks in their small college town, as a way to help pay for their college expenses. However, due to big success and since they enjoyed running their own business, the founders decided to pursue the business full-time after graduation.X-Opoly has growth over the last couple of years attributed to its designing and producing custom real estate trading games for universities, municipalities, chambers of commerce, and lately even some businesses. The company fills orders from a couple of hundred to several thousand and projects that its sales will grow 25 percent annually for the next five years. X-Opolyââ¬â¢s Process X-Opolyââ¬â¢s clients request either a new game board that has not been produced or repeat orders for a game that was previously prod uced.Once the request for a new game is received from a client, a meeting is arranged with a graphic designer from X-Opolyââ¬â¢s art department and the actual game board is designed. The approved designs are transferred electronically to the printing department where they are loaded onto personal computers and printed on special decals. The printing department is also responsible for printing the property cards, game cards, and money. The money is then moved to the cutting department, where it is cut into individual bills. Similarly, property cards and game cards are produced with the exception of using material resembling poster board. In addition to cutting the money, game cards, and property cards, the cutting department also cuts the cardboard that serves as the substrate for the actual game board. After being cut, game boards, money, and cards are stored in totes in a work-in-process area and delivered to the appropriate station on the assembly line as needed. X-Opoly Operati ons Efficiency Measuring X-Opolyââ¬â¢s performance is the key to improving its service to customers. The company currently operates 19 stations with a total cycle time of 6 min 45 sec per job.In my opinion, X-Opoly should consider combining assemblies within stations to reduce the number of stations. This process would allow some components to be partially assembled for the next station. This reduces the number of jobs involved in making multi-level products and keeps inventory to a minimum. Adopting a lean approach starts with a simple question: ââ¬Å"What's essential? â⬠Whether X-Opoly is simply trying to survive or conducting an assessment of their productivity, it is imperative to determine that every activity they engage in is essential in the value chain to providing a competitive product. This involves analyzing each phase of the product lifecycle from innovation, to design and development, to testing and, eventually, manufacturing and removing the waste from those p rocesses. For example, the companyââ¬â¢s production line maximum capacity/day is would increase by reducing the waste and redundancy in design and development which would increase the companyââ¬â¢s efficiency. To further improve X-Opolyââ¬â¢s efficiency, I would recommend developing a more formal manufacturing system (Flow Manufacturing). Flow manufacturing is a time-based process that pulls material through a production system without any interruption. (SAE. rg) This can be achieved by striking the proper balance between new technology and the proper amount of skilled labour. Flow manufacturing would reduce total cycle time, lessen inventory and increase X-Opolyââ¬â¢s productivity. The increase productivity would assist the company in meeting and possibly exceeding future demands. Finally, I believe X-Opoly would benefit from eliminating is non value added time to improve its efficiency. References Jacobs, F. , and Chase, R. , (2011). Tourism Course Issue
INTRODUCTIONThis chapter presents an overview of the current study which discusses the reasons of BS Tourism Management Students why they choose the course. Researcherââ¬â¢s from University of the East Caloocan focuses their attention on the studentââ¬â¢s reason they choose, it is to identify the number one reason of the students why do they took Tourism Management. This chapter includes the background of the study, plan of the thesis and its conclusion.BACKGROUND OF THE STUDYAccording to the research of Guangpeng Siriwan (2011), the tourism industry is one of the fastest growing industries worldwide. It is reported that the industry represented approximately 3 percent of the worldââ¬â¢s total labour force in 1999 (International Labour Organization 2001) and rose to approximately 8 percent and created more than 235 million jobs globally in 2010 (International Labour Organization 2010).As of today, many students choose the course Tourism Management without any possible reason , but only few students expressed little interest in pursuing the career because of their regrets in getting the course. That is why the researchers conducted a study to be able to understand what drives the students in choosing the course. As a result, it is important to develop the career-decision-making of the students, to identify the factors that pursue their decision making in taking the course.PLAN OF THE THESISThe primary purpose of the study is to identify and to understand the factors why do students choose their Tourism Management course. The researchers conducted a survey in the University of the East Caloocan that the BSTM 1st-4th year students answered. There are 40 participants every year is consist of 10 participants. The survey contains some of the possible reasons of taking up the course and they are only allowed to answer one possibleà reason. As the researchers gathered the surveys, they started to gather the results.CONCLUSIONThis chapter provides an overview of the current study. It introduces the research background of the study and the plan of the thesis. Later, it describes the primary purpose of the study, which is to investigate what drives the students to take the Tourism Management course and to understand the possible reasons.

Bloodlines Chapter Twelve
We tried to tell him that Tamara was killed by Strigoi, but he wonââ¬â¢t believe it. He doesnââ¬â¢t want to. He canââ¬â¢t take revenge on a Strigoi. Theyââ¬â¢re immortal. Invincible. But some human vampire hunter? Somehow, in his head, thatââ¬â¢s something he can go after. And if he canââ¬â¢t, then he can focus his energy on how the guardians wonââ¬â¢t go after these nonexistent vampire hunters.â⬠I just barely heard Eddie mutter, ââ¬Å"Strigoi arenââ¬â¢t that invincible.â⬠In the rearview mirror, I saw Jillââ¬â¢s face filled with compassion. She was seated between Lee and Eddie. ââ¬Å"Even if itââ¬â¢s a fantasy, maybe itââ¬â¢s better this way,â⬠she suggested. ââ¬Å"It gives him comfort. I mean, kind of. Having something tangible to hate is what gets him through. Otherwise heââ¬â¢d just give in to despair. Heââ¬â¢s not hurting anyone with his theories. I think heââ¬â¢s sweet.â⬠She caught her breath in that way she did when sheââ¬â¢d said a whole lot all at once. My eyes were back on the road, but I could swear Lee was smiling. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s nice of you,â⬠he told her. ââ¬Å"I know he likes having you around. Turn right up here.â⬠That was to me. Lee had been giving me directions ever since we left Clarenceââ¬â¢s. We were just outside of Palm Springs proper, nearing the very impressive-looking Desert Gods Golf Course and Resort. Further guidance from him led us to the Mega-Fun Mini-Golf Center, which was adjacent to the resort. I searched for a parking spot and heard Jill gasp when she caught sight of the golf courseââ¬â¢s crowning glory. There, in the center of a cluster of gaudily decorated putting greens, was a huge fake mountain with an artificial waterfall spouting from its top. ââ¬Å"A waterfall!â⬠she exclaimed. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s amazing.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well,â⬠said Lee, ââ¬Å"I wouldnââ¬â¢t go that far. Itââ¬â¢s made of water thatââ¬â¢s been pumped over and over and has God only knows what in it. I mean, I wouldnââ¬â¢t try to drink or swim in it.â⬠Before I even had the car to a stop, Adrian was out the door, lighting a cigarette. Weââ¬â¢d gotten in an argument on the way over, despite me telling him three times that Latte was a strictly no-smoking car. The rest of us soon got out as well, and I wondered what Iââ¬â¢d signed up for here as we strolled toward the entrance. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve actually never been mini-golfing,â⬠I remarked. Lee came to a halt and stared. ââ¬Å"Never?â⬠ââ¬Å"Never.â⬠ââ¬Å"How does that happen?â⬠asked Adrian. ââ¬Å"How is it possible that youââ¬â¢ve never played mini-golf?â⬠ââ¬Å"I had kind of an unusual childhood,â⬠I said at last. Even Eddie looked incredulous. ââ¬Å"You? I was practically raised at an isolated school in the middle of nowhere Montana, and even Iââ¬â¢ve played mini-golf.â⬠Saying I was homeschooled was no excuse this time, so I just let it go. Really, it just came down to having a childhood more focused on chemical equations than on fun and recreation. Once we started playing, I soon got the hang of it. My first few attempts were pretty bad, but I soon understood the weight of the club and how the angles on each course could be maneuvered. From there, it was pretty simple to calculate distance and force to make accurate shots. ââ¬Å"Unbelievable. If youââ¬â¢d been playing since you were a child, youââ¬â¢d be a pro by now,â⬠Eddie told me as I knocked my ball into a gaping dragonââ¬â¢s mouth. The ball rolled out the back, down a tube, bounced off a wall, and into the hole. ââ¬Å"Howââ¬â¢d you do that?â⬠I shrugged. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s simple geometry. Youââ¬â¢re not that bad either,â⬠I pointed out, watching him make his shot. ââ¬Å"How do you do it?â⬠ââ¬Å"I just line it up and putt.â⬠ââ¬Å"Very scientific.â⬠ââ¬Å"I just rely on natural talent,â⬠said Adrian, strolling up to the start of the Dragonââ¬â¢s Lair. ââ¬Å"When you have such a wealth of it to draw from, the danger comes from having too much.â⬠ââ¬Å"That makes no sense whatsoever,â⬠said Eddie. Adrianââ¬â¢s response was to pause and take out a silver flask from his inner coat pocket. He unscrewed it and took a quick drink before leaning in to line up his shot. ââ¬Å"What was that?â⬠I exclaimed. ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t have alcohol out here.â⬠ââ¬Å"You heard Jailbait earlier,â⬠he countered. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s the weekend.â⬠He lined up his ball and shot. The ball went directly for the dragonââ¬â¢s eye, bounced off it, and shot back toward Adrian. It rolled and came to a stop at his feet, nearly where it had started. ââ¬Å"Natural talent, huh?â⬠asked Eddie. I leaned forward. ââ¬Å"I think you broke the dragonââ¬â¢s eye.â⬠ââ¬Å"Just like Keith,â⬠said Adrian. ââ¬Å"I figured youââ¬â¢d appreciate that, Sage.â⬠I gave him a sharp look, wondering if there was any hidden meaning behind that. Mostly, Adrian seemed amused by his own wit. Eddie mistook my expression. ââ¬Å"That was inappropriate,â⬠he told Adrian. ââ¬Å"Sorry, Dad.â⬠Adrian shot again and managed not to maim any statues this time. A couple more shots, and he sank the ball. ââ¬Å"There we go. Three.â⬠ââ¬Å"Four,â⬠said Eddie and I in unison. Adrian looked at us incredulously. ââ¬Å"It was three.â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re forgetting about your first one,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"The one where you blinded the dragon.â⬠ââ¬Å"That was just the warm-up,â⬠Adrian argued. He put on a smile I think he hoped would charm me. ââ¬Å"Come on, Sage. You understand how my mind works. You said I was brilliant, remember?â⬠Eddie glanced at me in surprise. ââ¬Å"You did?â⬠ââ¬Å"No! I never said that.â⬠Adrianââ¬â¢s smile was infuriating. ââ¬Å"Stop telling people that.â⬠Since I was in charge of the scorecard, his play was logged as four, despite his many further protests. I started to move forward, but Eddie held out a hand to stop me, his hazel eyes gazing over my shoulder. ââ¬Å"Hold up,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"We need to wait for Jill and Lee.â⬠I followed his gaze. The two of them had been in deep conversation since we arrived, so much so that theyââ¬â¢d slowed and lagged behind the rest of us. Even during his bantering with Adrian and me, Eddie had continually checked on her ââ¬â and our surroundings. It was kind of amazing the way he could multitask. Thus far, Jill and Lee had only been one hole behind us. Now it was nearly two, and that was too far for Eddie to keep her in his sight. So, we waited while the oblivious couple meandered their way toward the Dragonââ¬â¢s Lair. Adrian took another drink from his flask and shook his head in awe. ââ¬Å"You had nothing to worry about, Sage. She went right for him.â⬠ââ¬Å"No thanks to you,â⬠I snapped. ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t believe you told her every detail of my visit that night. She was so mad at me for interfering behind her back with you, Lee, and Micah.â⬠ââ¬Å"I hardly told her anything,â⬠argued Adrian. ââ¬Å"I just told her to stay away from that human guy.â⬠Eddie glanced between our faces. ââ¬Å"Micah?â⬠I shifted uncomfortably. Eddie didnââ¬â¢t know about how Iââ¬â¢d gone proactive. ââ¬Å"Remember when I wanted you to say something to him? And you wouldnââ¬â¢t?â⬠I proceeded to tell him how Iââ¬â¢d then sought out Adrianââ¬â¢s help and found out about Leeââ¬â¢s interest in Jill. Eddie was aghast. ââ¬Å"How could you not tell me any of this?â⬠he demanded. ââ¬Å"Well,â⬠I said, wondering if everything I did was going to result in the wrath of a Moroi or dhampir, ââ¬Å"it didnââ¬â¢t involve you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Jillââ¬â¢s safety does! If some guy likes her, I need to know.â⬠Adrian chuckled. ââ¬Å"Should Sage have passed you a note in class?â⬠ââ¬Å"Leeââ¬â¢s fine,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"He obviously adores her, and itââ¬â¢s not like sheââ¬â¢ll ever be alone with him.â⬠ââ¬Å"We donââ¬â¢t know for sure that heââ¬â¢s fine,â⬠said Eddie. ââ¬Å"Whereas Micahââ¬â¢s a hundred percent okay? Did you do a background check or something?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"No,â⬠said Eddie, looking embarrassed. ââ¬Å"I just know. Itââ¬â¢s a feeling I get about him. Thereââ¬â¢s no problem with him spending time with Jill.â⬠ââ¬Å"Except that heââ¬â¢s human.â⬠ââ¬Å"They wouldnââ¬â¢t have gotten serious.â⬠ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t know that.â⬠ââ¬Å"Enough, you two,â⬠interrupted Adrian. Jill and Lee had finally reached the start of the Dragonââ¬â¢s Lair, meaning we could move on. Adrian lowered his voice. ââ¬Å"Your argumentââ¬â¢s useless. I mean, look at them. That human boy doesnââ¬â¢t enter into it.â⬠I looked. Adrian was right. Jill and Lee were clearly enthralled with each other. Some guilty part of me wondered if I should be a doing a better job of looking out for Jill. I was so relieved that she was interested in a Moroi that I hadnââ¬â¢t stopped to wonder if she should even be dating anyone. Was fifteen old enough? I hadnââ¬â¢t dated at fifteen. Iââ¬â¢d actually, well, never dated. ââ¬Å"There is an age difference between them,â⬠I admitted, more to myself. Adrian scoffed. ââ¬Å"Believe me, Iââ¬â¢ve seen age differences. Theirs is nothing.â⬠He walked off, and a few moments later, Eddie and I went to join him. Eddie maintained his simultaneous vigil of Jill, but this time, I got the impression the danger he was watching out for was right beside her. Adrianââ¬â¢s laughter rang out ahead of us. ââ¬Å"Sage!â⬠he called. ââ¬Å"You have got to see this.â⬠Eddie and I reached the next green and stared in astonishment. Then I burst out laughing. We had reached Draculaââ¬â¢s Castle. A huge, multi-towered black castle guarded the hole some distance away. A tunnel was cut out through the center of it with a narrow bridge meant for the ball to go over. If the ball fell off the sides before getting through the castle, it was returned back to the starting point. An animatronic Count Dracula stood off to the castleââ¬â¢s side. He was pure white, with red eyes, pointed ears, and slicked-back hair. He jerkily kept raising his arms to show off a batlike cape. Nearby, a speaker blasted eerie organ music. I couldnââ¬â¢t stop laughing. Adrian and Eddie looked at me as though theyââ¬â¢d never seen me before. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t think Iââ¬â¢ve ever heard her laugh,â⬠Eddie told him. ââ¬Å"Certainly not the reaction I was expecting,â⬠mused Adrian. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d been counting on abject terror, judging from past Alchemist behavior. I didnââ¬â¢t think you liked vampires.â⬠Still grinning, I watched Dracula raise his cape up and down. ââ¬Å"This isnââ¬â¢t a vampire. Not a real one. And thatââ¬â¢s what makes it so funny. Itââ¬â¢s pure Hollywood camp. Real vampires are terrifying and unnatural. This? This is hilarious.â⬠It was clear from their expressions that neither really understood why this would appeal to my sense of humor so much. Adrian did, however, offer to take a picture with my cell phone when I asked him. I posed by Dracula and put on a big smile. Adrian managed to snap the shot just as Dracula was raising his cape. When I viewed the picture, I was pleased to see it had come out perfectly. Even my hair looked good. Adrian gave the picture a nod of approval before handing me the phone. ââ¬Å"Okay, even I can admit thatââ¬â¢s pretty cute.â⬠I found myself overanalyzing the comment. What had he meant in saying even he could admit it? That I was cute for a human? Or that I had just met some kind of Adrian hot-girl criteria? Moments later, I had to forcibly stop thinking about it. Let it go, Sydney. Itââ¬â¢s a compliment. Accept it. We played through the rest of the course, finally finishing off with the waterfall itself. That was a particularly challenging hole, and I took my time lining up the shot ââ¬â not that I needed to. I was beating everyone pretty handily. Eddie was the only one who came close. It was clear Jill and Lee didnââ¬â¢t even have their attention on the game, and as for Adrian and his natural talentâ⬠¦ well, they were very solidly in last place. Eddie, Adrian, and I were still ahead of the other two, so we waited for them by the waterfall. Jill practically ran to it when she had the chance, gazing up at it with enchanted eyes. ââ¬Å"Oh,â⬠she breathed. ââ¬Å"This is wonderful. I havenââ¬â¢t seen this much water in days.â⬠ââ¬Å"Remember what I said about the toxicity,â⬠teased Lee. But it was clear he found her reaction endearing. As I glanced at the other two guys, I saw that they shared the same feelings. Well, not exactly the same. Adrianââ¬â¢s affection was clearly brotherly. Eddieââ¬â¢s? It was hard to read, kind of a mix of the other two. Maybe it was a kind of guardian fondness. Jill made a gesture to the waterfall, and suddenly, part of it broke off from the tumbling cascade. The chunk of water shaped itself into a braid, then twisted high into the air, making spirals before shattering into a million drops that misted over us all. I had been staring wide-eyed and frozen, but those drops hitting me shocked me awake. ââ¬Å"Jill,â⬠I said in a voice I barely recognized as my own. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t do that again.â⬠Jill, eyes bright, barely spared me a glance as she made another piece of water dance in the air. ââ¬Å"No oneââ¬â¢s around to see, Sydney.â⬠That wasnââ¬â¢t what had me so upset. That wasnââ¬â¢t what filled me with so much panic that I could barely breathe. The world was doing that thing where it started to spin, and I worried I was going to faint. Stark, cold fear ran through me, fear at the unknown. The unnatural. The laws of my world had just been broken. This was vampire magic, something foreign and inaccessible to humans ââ¬â inaccessible because it was forbidden, something no mortal was meant to delve into. I had only once seen magic used, when two spirit users had turned on each other, and I never wanted to see it again. One had forced the plants of the earth to do her bidding while the other telekinetically hurled objects meant to kill. It had been terrifying, and even though I hadnââ¬â¢t been the target, Iââ¬â¢d felt trapped and overwhelmed in the f ace of such otherworldly power. It was a reminder that these werenââ¬â¢t fun, easy people to hang out with. These were creatures wholly different from me. ââ¬Å"Stop it,â⬠I said, feeling the panic rise. I was afraid of the magic, afraid it would touch me, afraid of what it might do to me. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t do it anymore!â⬠Jill didnââ¬â¢t even hear me. She grinned at Lee. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re air, right? Can you create fog over the water?â⬠Lee stuffed his hands in his pockets and looked away. ââ¬Å"Ah, well, itââ¬â¢s probably not a good idea. I mean, weââ¬â¢re in publicâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Come on,â⬠she pleaded. ââ¬Å"It wonââ¬â¢t take any effort for you at all.â⬠He actually appeared nervous. ââ¬Å"Nah, not right now.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not you too.â⬠She laughed. Above her and in front of her, that demon water was still spinning, spinning, spinningâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"Jill,â⬠said Adrian, a harsher note in his voice than Iââ¬â¢d ever heard before. In fact, I couldnââ¬â¢t recall him ever addressing her by her actual name. ââ¬Å"Stop.â⬠It was all he said, but it was like a wave of something went through Jill. She flinched, and the water spirals disappeared, falling away in droplets. ââ¬Å"Fine,â⬠she said, looking confused. There was a moment of awkwardness, and then Eddie said, ââ¬Å"We should hurry. Weââ¬â¢re going to be pushing curfew.â⬠Lee and Jill set out to make their shots and soon were laughing and flirting again. Eddie continued watching them in his concerned way. Only Adrian paid any attention to me. He was the only one who really understood what had happened, I realized. His green eyes studied me, with no trace of their usual bitter humor. I wasnââ¬â¢t fooled, though. I knew there had to be some witty quip coming, mocking my reaction. ââ¬Å"Are you okay?â⬠he asked quietly. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m fine,â⬠I said, turning from him. I didnââ¬â¢t want him to see my face. Heââ¬â¢d already seen too much, seen my fear. I didnââ¬â¢t want any of them to know how afraid of them I was. I heard him take a few steps toward me. ââ¬Å"Sage ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Leave me alone,â⬠I snapped back. I hurried off toward the courseââ¬â¢s exit, certain he wouldnââ¬â¢t follow me. I was right. I waited for them to finish the game, using the alone time to calm myself down. By the time they caught up to me, I was fairly certain I had wiped most of the emotions from my face. Adrian still watched me with concern, which I didnââ¬â¢t like, but at least he didnââ¬â¢t say anything else about my breakdown. Surprising to no one, the final score showed that I had won and Adrian had lost. Lee had come in third, which seemed to trouble him. ââ¬Å"I used to be a lot better,â⬠he muttered, frowning. ââ¬Å"I used to be perfect at this game.â⬠Considering heââ¬â¢d spent most of the time paying attention to Jill, I thought third was a pretty respectable performance. I dropped him and Adrian off first and then just barely got Eddie, Jill, and me back to Amberwood on time. I was more or less back to normal by then, not that anyone wouldââ¬â¢ve noticed. Jill was floating on a cloud as we went into our dorm room, talking nonstop about Lee. ââ¬Å"I had no idea heââ¬â¢d traveled so much! Heââ¬â¢s maybe been more places than you, Sydney. He keeps telling me that heââ¬â¢ll take me to all of them, that weââ¬â¢ll spend the rest of our lives traveling and doing whatever we want. And heââ¬â¢s taking all sorts of classes in college because heââ¬â¢s not sure what he wants to major in. Well, not all sorts this semester. Heââ¬â¢s got a light schedule so that he can spend more time with his father. And thatââ¬â¢s good for me. For us, I mean.â⬠I stifled a yawn and nodded wearily. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s great.â⬠She paused from where sheââ¬â¢d been searching her dresser for pajamas. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry, by the way.â⬠I froze. I didnââ¬â¢t want an apology for the magic. I didnââ¬â¢t even want to remember it had happened. ââ¬Å"For yelling at you the other night,â⬠she continued. ââ¬Å"You didnââ¬â¢t set me up with Lee. I should never have accused you of interfering. He really has liked me all along, and, wellâ⬠¦ heââ¬â¢s really great.â⬠I let out the breath Iââ¬â¢d been holding and attempted a weak smile. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m glad youââ¬â¢re happy.â⬠She returned cheerfully to her tasks and to talking about Lee until I left to go down to the bathroom. Before brushing my teeth, I stood in front of the sink and washed my hands and arms over and over, scrubbing as hard as I could to wash away the magical drops of water I swore I could still feel on my skin. Bloodlines Chapter Twelve We tried to tell him that Tamara was killed by Strigoi, but he wonââ¬â¢t believe it.
